Thanks to Laura for this Frugal Baby Tip!
Here is the soap that I use. I can make a 2 gallon batch for about .85. I purchase the Borax and Arm & Hammer laundry soap at Wal-Mart. I've had to order the Fels Naptha Soap from the Dial Corp. because it was not offered in my area. I have heard that a lot of Wal-Marts and grocery stores offer it. You can call Dial Corp. 800# and they will let you know if it available in your area.
1/3 bar Fels Naptha Laundry Soap, grated
1/2 cup Borax (usually known as "20 Mule Team")
1/2 cup Arm & Hammer powdered laundry soap
In a saucepan mix Fels Naptha with 2 cups of water and simmer until soap is dissolved. Add Borax and Arm & Hammer Soap, stirring until it dissolves. Remove from heat. In a 2 gal household bucket add 2 qts of very hot water to the soap mixture. Stir until well mixed. Top off bucket with cold water and stir until mixed well.
Let it sit for 24 hours before using. This soap is usually sort of thick, at least for me. I have been told that it can come out sort of thin depending on the weather. Either way it works great.
Use about a cup per load.
NOTE: This is a low sudsing soap. It won't make any difference in the outcome of the clothes.
Fels Naptha is also an excellent pre-treatment. Just dampen the spot on the clothes and either rub the bar on it or use a toothbrush to brush it in.
NOTE: Do not use it to pretreat white clothes. The soap is sort of a yellow color and may spot the clothing.
