Diaper Washing_: Clean House, Clean Planet
Rate this post:Thanks to Katherine for this Frugal Baby Tip!
On another diapering list, we were talking about vinegar in the diaper pail... Either a splash in the bottom of an essentialy "dry pail"... Or hanging in a vinegar ball...but someone wondered if it would do anything if just hanging in a vinegar ball......
I was just reading from my trusty book, Clean House, Clean Planet. She says that vinegar is excellent at absorbing odors. Because of this, she keeps a
spray bottle of white vinegar (she likes Heinz best - in her opinion, it smells milder) scented with essential oil of peppermint by her diaper pail and sprays it when ever she has to open the pail or start the laundry... Says it's very effective at "absorbing the odor"...
Also, she has another yummy idea that I'm going to try. Baking soda in a shaker container, mixed with any of the following essential oils (just a few drops) eucalyptus, tea tree, lavendar, lime (my current favorite), lemon.... Then just occasionally sprinkle some in your diaper pail....... Baking soda absorbs odor too... As we know from keeping it in the fridge, the freezer, etc....
She also uses scented vinegars for her laundry rinses..... 50-75 drops of essential oil per *gallon* of vinegar.
She doesn't use borax much as it does have slightly more environmental impact than some other things, but does use it occasionlly for laundry. Recommends first trying baking soda...doesn't say anything about washing soda though. I'd bet she'd recommend that as freely as baking soda.
It's a great book with useful ideas, and it's a really fun read.
