Thanks to Stefanie for this Frugal Baby Tip!
I love crunching numbers and have done some research into this! One of the best things you can do is find used. You can get most everything reasonable this way... especially covers! The exception is MotherEase... they usually aren't any cheaper used... but occasionally.
I think alot of it depends on the size child you are diapering. Most of the stuff starts off around 10-22 lbs... So if your baby is like 15 lbs. then you don't have to buy any of the small stuff!! Here are 2 scenarios I posted on another Cloth diaper board:
I would shop online... You can find good deals on used. But even new.. You could probably get your stuff for less than $150 depending on the system you used. I guess the best system would depend on how big your baby is as to how many diapers you'd need.
For example:
Kooshies Classics - You can get 20 of these... Right now The Baby Station is having a sale on them... You can get 20 for $115.50
Wraps - You can get whatever you want... They range from $4-9 new... and even cheaper used. Let's say you got 5 at $5 each..that'd be $25.
So total cost would be $140.50
You could do prefolds too... But you'd have to pin if you used a Snap wrap. Otherwise you could get Velcro wraps and then you wouldn't need to pin.
Example...
2 dozen at $25 per dozen .. $50
5 wraps at $5 each..............$25
Total $75
I have even gotten the Proservice Prefolds in gently used condition for cheaper than the above. So there are economical ways to go... For even possibly less than a month's worth of disposable diapers!! You could start off with prefolds and add fitted as you find them used.
I figured lots of different scenarios and still decided I'd like to do Motherease Pops since they adjust with baby. More upfront.. But a little cheaper in the long run. You just have to buy 2 sizes of wraps to go with them..and I'm supplementing with prefolds.
Anyway..I wish you success!!
