I use hemp terry-- no more than 4 layer max, probably only need 3 for an infant diaper. Yea, it's not too soft, but you know it's bothered neither babe's skin & my daughter has really sensitive skin like me. Or try the hemp "fleece" (think sweatshirt).

I just put a fleece liner on top when I need it instead of sewing one on since I manage to make my fleece repel every now and then because I use ointment. I made some doublers with sport jersey mesh (big holes) and they work great!

I've also made a pile of recycled diapers using old jeans and towels & flannel sheets & receiving blankies and 100% cotton bluejeans. Three layers jeans with one layer flannel on top for softness makes great diapers too, and they look so darned CUTE!!
